DVD July 1: Highlights of the week include In Bruges, Vantage Point, Quantum Hoops |
Quantum Hoops: The California Institute of Technology has one of the highest SAT score averages in the world. Its graduates are Nobelaureates, and in the world of pure and applied sciences, Caltech is considered second to none. On the basketball court, however, things look a little different. The Caltech Beavers haven't won a single league game since 1985. They've been the laughing stock of the NCAA for more than two decades, but in the past few years, a flicker of hope streaked across the key with the enrolment of a handful of bona fide basketball players. For long- losing coach Roy Dow - who has yet to experience a digit in the W-column - there's a real chance at claiming some glory, even if it's just one game. But will the Beavers be able to gnaw through the rings of history before time runs out? A documentary that quickly blossoms into an oddball nail-biter, this little story of the hardworking Caltech Beavers redesigns all sports movie cliche for the better. DVD features include commentary by director Rick Greenwald, narration by David Duchovny. (Import). |
